12 tons d’indigo, Jie Yu

5 to 21 May 2023

Jie Yu’s digital work 12 shades of indigo is the result of a research-creation project as part of a custom PhD in digital art, dance and intangible heritage. This work focuses on the transmission of Bouyei intangible heritage. More specifically, it is based on the twelve tones of the bronze drum, which constitute a pillar of this indigenous culture of Southwest China.

The public has a unique opportunity to learn about twelve founding notions of the Bouyei culture. Dance sequences are presented through an augmented reality application from which emerges a 3D character dressed in traditional Bouyei costume. Each dance sequence is accompanied by ethnographic information explaining the key concepts of the Bouyei philosophy. The spectators thus have access to an intellectual and sensitive experience of this culture.

The 12 shades of indigo reflect a tradition and the meanings attached to its intangible nature. Such a project postulates that digital creation can contribute to the preservation of an indigenous culture by inscribing it in modernity, while reaffirming its place in the diversity of world cultures.
