Object theater – Ages 9 and up
This is an artistic encounter between two natives and two non-natives. Through a two-phase creative residency, the four artists are invited to create a work of object theater for a young audience. The creative team will have carte blanche as to the age of the target audience and the subject(s) addressed. The focus is on the artistic encounter between these people from two different cultures.
“ We don’t want to impose a theme for creation, as we prefer an approach based on artists’ self-determination. We prefer egalitarian, non-colonial relationships. We give artists the freedom to meet and express themselves. However, we define the framework of the residency on a few points. The first is the theatrical genre: object theater. The second is the sharing of languages. Both Anicinabe and French will be heard in the work. For the moment, there are no translations or surtitles to ensure that all languages are understood. We believe that the language barrier is a crucial issue in the encounter with First Nations, and that it must be an integral part of the work. But this point will be discussed at greater length with the creative team. The third element is sharing space. That’s why the residency will have two phases. ”
The first phase will take place during the Miaja gathering in the Anicinabe community of Kitcisakik at the end of August. This phase is one of inspiration, contamination, exchange and encounters with the people and culture of Kitcisakik. The second phase will take place in the studio at Agora des Arts in February 2024. This phase will see the creation of a work of object theater – or at last – its first draft.
This project received financial support from CALQ under the Programme de partenariat territorial de l’Abitibi-Témiscamingue.
