As part of Rouyn-Noranda’s 100th anniversary celebrations, the Municipal Library is proud to welcome Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ) for a series of three exceptional historical lectures.
Hosted by Sébastien Tessier, these evenings will highlight the work of archives and the documents that tell history differently. Through newcomer files, expedition routes, rare documents, and other fascinating finds, the history of Rouyn and Noranda is revealed, one document at a time. A unique dive into the past, where archives become living witnesses to the founding, development, and evolution of our territory.

January 21: From the origins to the post-war period (1920s to 1940s)
This first lecture takes us on a journey to the origins of Rouyn and Noranda, from the 1920s to the 1940s. Using archival documents from the BAnQ—newcomer records, correspondence, maps, shipping routes, and other founding documents—Sébastien Tessier traces the beginnings of a rapidly developing territory. A captivating dive into the early days of the region.
November 18: From yesterday to today (1950s to present)
From the postwar period to the present, this conference examines the significant social, cultural, and economic transformations of Rouyn-Noranda. Through carefully selected archival documents, the BAnQ reveals how the city has been shaped over the decades.
