Bill Barker, an oil driller in the American town of Stillwater, visits his daughter, who has been imprisoned for several years in Marseille. She is accused of having killed a friend: a crime she claims to be innocent of. Faced with the court’s refusal to re-evaluate new evidence, Bill conducts his own investigation. “If the first scenes seem to lay the foundations of a vengeful whodunit in the style of Liam Neeson, Tom McCarthy quickly takes us elsewhere. In other words, a bittersweet – and sometimes luminous – meditation on the clash of cultures, the capacity for change and forgiveness. “(Georges Privet, Médiafilm)
