Exhibition “Des instants boréals”

14 May to 27 June 2026

Opening: May 14, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

For over forty years, Denis Michaud has been forging a unique artistic language, inspired by the vast territories and rich biodiversity of Abitibi-Témiscamingue. Known for his monumental sculptures, he explores a more intimate visual language in this new exhibition, “Des Instants Boréals,” a body of rare and precious works created on delicate formats ranging from 5 to 14 inches. Interspersed throughout this collection is a larger piece that creates a striking dialogue between the intimate and the monumental. This deliberate choice invites a privileged relationship with the work, transforming each encounter into a meticulous discovery where the gaze, awakened by this interplay of scales, is lost in the richness of detail.

Michaud’s approach is fundamentally guided by the interplay of materials and the play of contrasts. He intertwines the industrial rigidity of metal, which he works with goldsmith-like precision to soften its apparent coldness, with the organic warmth and narrative grain of driftwood, patinated by the elements of Lake Preissac. To this powerful duo is added color and more organic textures thanks to painted polymer clay and glazed ceramic. These materials, worked with traditional techniques for a finish that is both rustic and detailed, breathe striking vitality and realism into his subjects. They enrich the dialogue of materials by creating a powerful contrast between the mineral coldness of the metal, the natural warmth of the wood, and the vibrant brilliance of these finely crafted elements.

What fascinates Denis Michaud is the tension between raw power and the delicacy of life. He does not seek to reproduce nature, but to capture a boreal moment, an ephemeral essence of nature, and freeze it in a sculptural form. Whether it’s the raw energy captured in “Running Wild,” two wolves in motion; the observant tranquility of “Noctambule,” an owl whose piercing gaze is a focal point of light; or the promising fragility of “La Relève,” a nest and its eggs, each work is a pretext for formal exploration.

“Des Instants Boréals” is the culmination of a reflection in which the artist pushes his medium further, demonstrating that emotion can arise from the tension between opposing materials. The power of a work, he reminds us, lies not in its sheer scale, but in the intention that animates it and the dialogue it creates, whether intimate or monumental. It is an invitation to contemplate a world in miniature to appreciate its grandeur, and to be surprised by the strength that also emanates from a more imposing presence.
