Nos mères meurent (et nous n’y pouvons rien)

14 November 2025

7:30 p.m.

Francine, 63, disappears into dementia. Isabelle, her daughter, is going through white mourning, the mourning of a living person. For Isabelle, the writings Francine left behind during her life are like pebbles to follow along the path of their story, between the Magdalen Islands and Abitibi. If disappearing weighs much more heavily than dying, this text will bring you back to the inescapable and the living, to the impermanence and perenniality of things.

Nos mères meurent (et nous n’y pouvons rien) is a poignant and luminous life story that takes us on a journey through the legacy of the colonization of Abitibi by the Madelinots and Madeliniennes. With words imbued with humor and gentleness, this play describes the inescapable disappearance of loved ones. The show is brilliantly performed by Dominique Quesnel and Janie Lapierre.
