His work is part of the tradition of European social realism that developed in reaction to the idealism and exaggerated self encouraged by Romanticism. Although these notions are fluid depending on the artist, they almost always employ a form of descriptive and critical realism. Sébastien Ouellette’s works draw attention to socio-political conditions and realities of contemporary life. The omnipresence of the virtual world in our daily lives and its impact on our individual and collective behavior are at the center of this body of work. There is a mise en abyme of situations related to the frequentation of the art world whose protagonists become themselves the subject of the works. These scenes thus refer to an ambiguity between the context of representation and that of the represented.
