Retrospective 5 5: le merveilleux normal (the wonderful normal) offers an incursion into the teeming universe of Roger Pelerin. A universe to which he dedicated himself “from morning to night, from Monday to Sunday, 355 days a year for 55 years”.
Enhanced by the multimedia designs of videographer Dominic Leclerc and curator Mathieu Gnocchini, the exhibition places the works created 15, 25 and 55 years ago in their historical context.
Biography
A graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts de Québec (1967-1970), Roger Pelerin also studied at the Atelier de réalisation graphique de Québec (1977-1980). Recognized for his mastery of printmaking techniques, he also developed a practice as a painter, sculptor and mosaicist. Originally from the Quebec City area, he settled in Abitibi-Ouest in the 1980s.
He pursued an assiduous artistic practice for over 55 years. He compensates for the lack of means by a frugal life and especially by a constantly renewed inventiveness. A large part of his work will be realized directly in his workshop on Nepawa Island, in the middle of the great Lake Abitibi.
He regularly signs a comic strip in L’Indice bohémien, the cultural newspaper of Abitibi-Témiscamingue. In 2015, he received the Honorary Prize and the Public Prize of the Triennale en métiers d’art of the Centre d’art de La Sarre. His works have been presented several times at the Biennale internationale d’art miniature de Ville-Marie. In 2004, he was awarded the Regional Prize. His works are part of the collections of the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Québec, Loto-Québec, the Bibliothèque nationale du Québec and the Musée d’art de Rouyn-Noranda.
