In this double representation, where animal comedy gives way to human drama, Poulenc’s La voix humaine takes on an almost verisimilitude of its own, as an amorous breakup is woven through the banal words of a telephone exchange.
In this painful monologue, a woman tries to talk to her lover, gently exposing her sadness and pain at being abandoned over the phone. In the first half, a singer presents a selection of French animal melodies, where lightness contrasts with the lyrical tragedy of the second half. Ravel’s Histoires naturelles cycle and other melodies harmonize with Poulenc’s La voix humaine in this rich, daring and contrasting lyrical concert.
