Lieven Meyer scratches away at the geo and socio-political history of Abitibi-Témiscamingue, turning it into a conveyor belt for a crumbling place and giving it a voice.
In an approach that could be described as para-archaeological, Meyer traces the history of a ruined frame, once a schoolhouse. He then takes part in the demolition of the building – now an agricultural garage, then abandoned for some twenty years – to extract materials for a contemporary sculpture based on the structure of a skateboard ramp. He brings youth to life through vestiges as a call for durability, a cry of hope shouted out by Rochebeaucourt to the (absent) next generation. His work is a keen reflection on transformation, the ephemeral and the legacy. Vieille école (Old School) is a temporary sculpture that has been created through encounters with various communities in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region since autumn 2022.
