Saison des migraines – Frances Adair Mckenzie

31 August to 15 October 2023

Exhibition from August 31 to October 15, 2023

Opening on August 31, 2023

Frances Adair Mckenzie’s work knows no disciplinary or geographic boundaries. Based in Tiohtià:ke (Montreal), the artist works in animation, sculpture and video installation, traveling the world with her creations. Through an approach linked to themes of desire, materiality and biopower, Frances constructs works in which the public is totally integrated, and in which notions of public and private space are blurred. Frances exploits the places she invests in all their grandeur, and thinks of their architecture in such a way as to stimulate the movement and reflections of those who move through them, giving clues but not always answers, and above all, ensuring the triumph of beauty.

For Saison des migraines, Frances intends to develop an installation directly rooted in the territorial and socio-political reality of Rouyn-Noranda, proposing a material and metaphorical reflection on the links between digital technologies and extraction. Always keen to deepen her argument by drawing on one or more historical works of art appropriate to the context, Frances will draw inspiration from Joyce Weiland’s structuralist film Solidarity, echoing the cyclical and subjective nature of events inscribed in our collective memory. Referring also to Albrecht Durer’s Faraday cages and perspective grids, Frances challenges the capitalist and patriarchal paradigm through which we perceive the world. By constructing an installation of bronze mesh screens on which she plans to integrate an image specifically linked to the site, the artist hopes to contrast notions of enclosure and blockage with those of connection and transparency, to remind us that our understanding of the environments that surround us is above all a question of perspective.
