An up-and-coming Irish writer, a Hollywood star and a well-established English director are brought together for the London premiere of a long-awaited play. But their first meeting, at the dawn of rehearsals, doesn’t go exactly as planned… each with a different, fixed vision of the issues addressed in the play. How far are they willing to go to get their way?
A delicious black comedy with skilfully crafted dialogue, Ulster American tackles the thorny question of cultural identity, but also the all-consuming ambition that sweeps away everything in its path. David Ireland’s text also sheds light on the ravages of over-inflated egos, the phenomenon of “mansplaining” and the feminism of window-dressing – that which is adopted for the sake of expediency.
