Summary of the play
Dr. Stockmann, a doctor at the thermal baths in his village, discovers that the water there is contaminated. It is his duty to inform the population. This news is not well received by his brother, the mayor of the place, who tries to stifle it even if it means uniting the villagers against Doctor Stockmann. While he thought he would receive the recognition of his fellow citizens, Dr. Stockmann becomes instead the enemy of the people.
